Last week, I assisted a mature aged jobseeker with his first government application. My, Oh My! What a minefield….
It’s hard enough fighting age discrimination (yes, I know it’s still there) let alone having to do cartwheels to write an application. This poor applicant didn’t even have a CV, as is the case with many Baby Boomers who’ve never really needed to apply for a job in the past.
Let me explain more about this application..
You know how difficult it is to write a Selection Criteria Statement? Well, this was a Key Capabilities Statement – no selection criteria as such. In this three page statement, we had to demonstrate numerous key competencies. As applications go, it was a doozy! I’ll let you know how it turns out.

I certainly understand your frustration with applying for a governmen tjob. I’ve actually written applications for university lecturers who were just as mystified as you are. The most important thing to consider when applying for a government job is to read the instructions carefully…then read them again. After you are sure what is required, get out your highlighter and start marking all of the important information such as closing date, contact person, instructions, etc. Then, work through systematically, setting up your document using the SC as your header and responding using dot points to show workplace examples of how you meet that particular criterion. Yes, I would certainly recommend a free platform such as WordPress but make sure you have the skills to maintain it..or find someone who can help you. I’m a published author of four books – three were Indie books and one was a mainstream national publisher – GO INDIE!!!!
